| The restrictive attributive clauses in the author’s translation of the second part contingency plan of the maritime literature Manual on Oil Pollution is taken as research subject in the research report. The translation methods of restrictive attributive clauses in contingency plan are analyzed and discussed in the report.Restrictive attributive clause plays a role of restricting the modified antecedent to make the word meaning more specific and clear. There are many restrictive attributive clauses in Manual on Oil Pollution. How to convey the meaning of source text as much as possible and make the translation idiomatic becomes a difficult problem. The first step of studying restrictive attributive clauses is to distinguish restrictive attributive clauses and non-restrictive attributive clauses from a grammatical perspective.Restrictive attributive clauses do not use comma to separate them from main clauses and have a close relationship to the modified antecedents.Due to the different characteristics of restrictive attributive clauses, the translation methods and techniques are different. The common translation methods include pre-attributive method,post-attributive method and mixing. After extracting restrictive attributive clauses in the source text, the author analyzes the specific applied translation methods. The findings are summarized as follows:(1)when antecedents are closely related to attributive clauses and the clauses are simple,pre-attributive method is usually adopted;(2)when attributive clauses are complicated or long,pre-attributive method will make the translation difficult to understand and not idiomatic.Under such circumstance,post-attributive method is usually used, which makes the structures of sentences clear and the main parts compact;(3)mixing is usually adopted when translating restrictive attributive clauses which involve "there be" sentence pattern and some restrictive attributive clauses, namely to translate the attributive clauses into independent sentences. |
