The translation of literary works is an important medium for foreigners to learn about China. It has become many scholars' consensus to spread and generalize Chinese culture through translating literary works. During translation process, apart from linguistic factors, translation is also affected by non-linguistic factors. This thesis aims to analyze non-linguistic factors in the translation of Greenwood Riverside from the perspective of manipulation theory. Manipulation Theory breaks up traditional research model and adopts descriptive method. It pays more attention to the non-linguistic factors, which widens translation study from text to cultural area. As one of the important representatives of manipulation school, Andre Lefevere considered that translation was manipulated by three factors, ideology, patronage and poetic. Greenwood Riverside, as the representative work of Ye Guangqin, has rich regional color of Shaanxi. Its English version will help to spread Shaanxi culture to the foreign countries.Through comparing Greenwood Riverside and its English version, the author finds that the three factors---patronage, poetic and ideology make important effect in the translation process. At first, the influence of ideology to the translation includes three aspects. It manipulates translation purpose and enables it to meet the need of mainstream ideology. It also manipulates translators' attitude. On the one hand, translators must respect source text and try their best to convey the author's thought. On the other hand, the translators live in contemporary society, so it is impossible to avoid the influence of ideology for them. Ideology also manipulates translation strategies used by translators. Since the English version of Greenwood Riverside will help the foreigners to understand the Chinese culture and literature, translators must adjust their strategies to meet the reading habits of the target readers. In addition, ideology also manipulates the deletion and deleting unsuitable contents. Secondly, there are two patronages for the translation process. The direct one, Taibai Literary and Art Press, selects the translation text and translators. The indirect one, Jerry is responsible for modifying some parts to meet the need of western readers. Finally, poetic is also an important factor. Because of different poetic and custom in each country, the translators must adjust their translation habits to meet the poetic of western readers.
