A Study Of The English Version Of Xiongdi From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

This thesis mainly concerns the study on the English version Brothers translated by Eileen Chen-yin Chow and Carlos Rojas from the perspective of relevance theory.The paper aims at studying how to grasp and preserve the communicative clues under different translation situations so as to assure the transmission of the information intentions and communicative intentions of the original to the translated text.Relevance translation theory claims that the communicative clues provided in the original language text can manifest the communicative values of the context and then can assure to lead readers to acquire the author's intentions.In terms of this view,especially in the process of literary translation,it is better to preserve the communicative clues of the original text so that can help the target language readers infer the author's intentions and get the same contextual effect like the original language readers.Communicative clues which are embodied in the semantic representation,syntactic properties,pragmatic properties,rhetoric devices,onomatopoeic expressions and cultural-loaded words,refers to the manifestations adopted by the original which have great contribution to the transmission of the intentions.This thesis adopts the English version Brothers and its original novel Xiongdi as the research texts and analyzes the communicative clues from six aspects like semantic representation,syntactic properties,pragmatic properties,rhetoric devices,onomatopoeic expressions and cultural-loaded words etc..It turned out that the translated version handles with the translation problems under the combination of "direct translation" strategy and "indirect translation" strategy which are proposed by Gutt in his work.Through the preservation of semantic representation,syntactic properties,pragmatic properties,rhetoric devices,onomatopoeic expressions and cultural-loaded words of the original,readers can smoothly infer the intended intentions of the original like the original readers with spend the minimal effort.Because of the differences of the different cultural backgrounds,direct translation can not solve all the translation phenomena,so the appearance of indirect translation can fix this problem andcan achieve the transmission of the intentions.Therefore,the combination of direct translation strategy and indirect translation strategy can help the translators handle with literary translation practice very well.This thesis focuses on the translation intention recreation of the original with the preservation of communicative clues.With the example-analysis method,it aims to analyze the translators' excellent work so as to demonstrate the important role of the preservation of communicative clues in the literary translation.At the same time,this thesis also aims to prove the accounting power of the relevance translation theory to the literary translation practice.
