On The Reproduction Of Illocutionary Force In Chinese-English Translation

China in the Eyes of a Young Architect,a book about architectural culture of China,not only displays the characteristics of Chinese architecture from a unique perspective,but also describes the Chinese mentality or tradition of Chinese people in plain and affectionate language.The second chapter Philosophical Thinking on Natural Residence: Cave Dwelling of the book demonstrates the architecture on the loess plateau in the northwestern area of China—cave dwelling.The words and sentences are distinctively scientific,literary and popular.Based on the translation of 6,000 words for this chapter,the thesis explores the strategies for reproducing in target language the illocutionary force of the source text.Illocutionary force is the communicative meaning of words,and during the process of translation,the author of the thesis finds that some relevant theories of illocutionary force are of great importance for guiding translation practice,and can be employed to make the target text take on the same illocutionary force as the original;thus we are able to improve the quality of translation.The author firstly sorts out some relevant theories of illocutionary force at home and abroad,makes clear the current research on translation under the guidance of speech act theory,analyses the illocutionary force of China in the Eyes of a Young Architect from a macro perspective,and points out the difficulties in reproducing the illocutionary force in translation.The points are illustrated by examples taken from Chapter Two of the book.Theories about illocutionary force are applied to translation practice in order to probe the strategies for reproducing the illocutionary force on the level of word,syntax,figure of speech and style.On the level of word,it is advisable to adjust the order of words,control the number of words,and choose appropriate words;on the level of syntax,it is advisable to split long sentences,combine short sentences,and reproduce rhythm;on the level of figure of speech,the proposal is to reproduce the figures of speech;on the level of style,the proposal is to make the target text elegant and clear.The research is expected to provide strategies for the practice of C-E Translation.
