As a contemporary American writer,Joyce Carol Oates(1938--)is not only famous for her deep concern about the reality and unique writing style,but also controversy for her prolific writing with violent tendencies.Her academic novels is based on deep insight into critiquing and exposing real problems in colleges and universities.From the perspective of micro-power,the colleges and universities in the works of Joyce Carol Oates ’ novel is no longer the ivory tower,but a special power field.The relationship between students and pupils,students and teachers,teachers and teachers reflects the micro-power in colleges and universities everywhere.It is particularly evident in the academic novels of Them;Unholy Loves;Marya:A Life;I’ll Take You There and The Hungry Ghosts:Seven Allusive Comedies.The work I’ll take you there is special as it is one of the academic novels with a distinctive autobiography.Compared with other academic novel,this work use a lot of Artistic techniques such as inner monologue to describe a Female college students of philosophy return to the self-life after experiencing the defeat of the series looking for emotional closeness.The relationships between she and the society,she and other people,she and herself reflected in the novel reflect the four dimensions of micro-power--discipline power,space power,the others’power and subjectivity power.Micro-power theory was constructed by a contemporary French philosopher Michel Foucault(Michel Foucault,1926--1984).The theory aims to review the operation of power in a micro view insdead of the "Justice-sexual" power mode in the past.Foucault focus his attention on the power pattern of the edge,the bottom,and the micro from the angle of the poor,the unemployed,the mentally ill and other marginalized or vulnerable groups.And he thinks that power is diverse,decentralized insdead of the traditional power of center and overall.From this perspective,the modern society is a disciplinary society which constituted by a pervasive network of micro-power.Therefore,the paper is focused on the work I’ll take you there,using close reading,thematic research or other methods to explore the relations of power and how they function according to the four dimensions of micro power.On one hand,we can research the living reality in the university environment from a new perspective;on the other hand,we can find out more about Joyce Carol Oates’sharp eyes focus on real human feelings and unique variety of artistic practices.The paper is divided into four parts.The first chapter,summarization of Joyce Carol Oates’works with her creation stage.Besides,the chapter analysis the study of Joyce Carol Oates in America and China of the present situation.In addition,their are the basis and the significance of this paper in chapter one.The second chapter including the definition and analysis of Foucault’s micro-power and Joyce Carol Oates ’ academic novel.The third chapter is analysis of I take you there from the perspective of micro-power,focusing on power relations and the social realities in the text from the four dimensions of discipline power,space power,the others’power and subjectivity power.The fourth chapter summarizes the academic novel of Joyce Carol Oates,particularly of I’ll take you there,for its literary value and the enlightenment significance to the contemporary literature.
