A Translation Report On Study Of Deng Xiaoping’s Theory On Social Construction (Chapter 9)

Since China’s reform and opening-up,frequent communication and cooperation have occurred between China and foreign countries.With development deepening in the breadth and depth of reform and opening-up,the rest of the world has been expecting to know more about rising China.Deng Xiaoping,as the core of the second generation leaders of the CPC has put forward several remarkable policies such as"Reform and Opening-up" and "One Country,Two Systems",which have made great contribution to the rise of China and the integration of China and the world.Through the translation of Study of Deng Xiaoping:s Theory on Social Construction,foreigners can have a better understanding of China.Meanwhile,it is conducive to build a positive image internationally,to improve China’s cultural soft power,and to create a favorable external environment for China’s modernization.Meanwhile,the author can test her translating skills and improve it accordingly,and apply translation theory to practice.The source text of the translation project is Study of Deng Xiaoping s Theory on Social Construction.Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 is assigned to the author,which respectively illustrates Deng Xiaoping’s exploration of how to improve governments’public services and solve social conflicts.The author finally chooses Chapter 9 as the source text of the translation report after making a comparison between the two chapters on lexical,syntactic and rhetorical level.According to Newmark’s text typology,political publicity texts have three main functions:the expressive function,the informative function and the vocative function.During the process of translation,the author will adopt semantic translation and communicative translation.After analyzing lexical,syntactic and rhetorical aspects of the source text and the purpose of political texts,the author decides to take semantic translation and communicative translation alternatively in completing the translation project.The paper consists of five chapters.The first chapter is project description,introducing the background,target and significance of the translation project.The second chapter is about the background of the source text,including the content and linguistic features of the source text.Chapter three gives a brief introduction of Newmark’s text typology,the definition,similarities and differences of semantic translation and communicative translation.The fourth chapter is focused on case study which is the paramount part of the whole paper,which focuses on translating political terms and neologisms,culture-loaded words,four-character idioms,sentences without subject,long sentences,simile and metaphor,and repetition and parallelism under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation.Chapter five is the conclusion,including the experience and lessons acquired and problems to be solved.
