Maugham is one of the richest " exoticis" writers in English literature in the twentieth Century.His whole life is the life of travel and creation.He has gone through many countries and created many literary works with foreign backgrounds.Maugham’s writing on the natural landscape and cultural landscape of foreign countries has a strong utopian color.His works reveal the unique beauty of exotic landscapes and the unique connotation of exotic spiritual culture.It takes the readers into the reality and illusion of the text,through the vivid depiction of utopia cause the people to the culture reflection.This thesis tries to study from the theory of comparative image literature path into Maugham’s novels,short stories,travels,and essays creation,combined with the city culture research and ecological criticism research to analyze the causes of Maugham’s utopian complex and exotic imagination,to explore the deep meaning of the unique foreign image in the text,and to clarify the important role of foreign imagination in Maugham’s spiritual exploration and cultural reflection.Then summed up the unique contribution and value of Maugham’s exotic imagination.The introduction mainly introduces the creation of Maugham,the achievements and deficiency of the scholars at home and abroad in the study of the works of Maugham,as well as the innovation and research value of this thesis.In addition to the introduction,the text is divided into four parts.The first chapter focuses on the analysis of the possible factors influencing the formation of Maugham’s exotic imagination.Any writer’s imagination of a foreign country is a double imagination.First of all,the collective consciousness of European Society and the previous literature influence on Maugham’s works,we should study the collective imagination from the aspects of history,politics,economy,social psychology and diplomatic relations;In addition,we also analyze the reasons from the personal aspects that Maugham deviated from the social collective imagination,that is Maugham’s travel experience,thought,emotion and other psychological factors,as well as the complexity of his own culture on the formation of the exotic image in the eyes of Maugham.The second chapter is the main part of the paper,mainly takes Tahiti,China,India and Spain for example,to explore the characteristics and cultural symbol of the exotic image in Maugham’s works.Maugham’s writing of foreign countries is not all fiction or reproduction,but a combination of Maugham’s personal feelings and imagination.This chapter starts from the inside of the text,explores the deep meaning behind the words,the hierarchical relations and the storyline,analyzes how Maugham’s utopianimage is described in the text.The third chapter is the opposition and supplement to the second chapter,research Maugham as the main body of the imagination to the deconstruction of the "self"(Western Society).Seepage theory of city culture study western metropolitan life.This chapter analyzes the image of Westerners in Maugham’s works,that is,in the complex context and the cultural conflicts between the East and the west to examine the "self" and reflect "self ".It exposes the ills of western civilization and the degeneration of modern western people,criticizes the arrogance and prejudice in the western collective consciousness.The last chapter summed up the value orientation of Maugham’s exotic imagination.The purpose of Maugham’s exotic writing is to engage in a dialogue between different cultures.His attitude is the recognition of the "other" and the question of "self",he wants to use heterogeneous culture remedy western culture.His work is an attempt to construct an ideal cultural identity.
