Taking Shuihu Zhuan written by Shi Naian and its English translation by Sidney Shapiro as the case, this thesis inclines to study the masculine beauty embodied in the English translation from the perspective of poetics proposed by Roman Jakobson. The author aims at systematically and comprehensively analyzing whether in Shapiro's English translation the masculine beauty is embodied, and if it is,how the translator achieves it.Traditional poetics is just about poetry. However, after Jakobson, the object of contemporary poetics is no longer limited to poetry, but extends to the whole literature. In Jakobson's theory, the language has six factors. Each factor corresponds to a function. They are context(referential),message(poetic),addresser(emotive),addressee(conative),contact(phatic),and code(metalingual). The so-called poetic function is the function that"focuses on the message itself",which means that language does not point to any external things, and does not take a part in conveying, but only focuses on the aesthetic significance of their own sounds, vocabulary and syntax.Since poetics is a learning about the language arts,we can use the concept of poetics to analyze literary works and their translation.Traditionally, masculine beauty is always defined from the perspective of philosophy. From the perspective of poetics, masculine beauty is not manifested by the things signified by words, nor by the inner meaning of the language, even more not by the layout of the whole story, but manifested by the pronunciation, the arrangement of words and the sentence patterns.Masculine beauty, from the perspective of poetics,is sonorous and powerful pronunciation,is the impact of the part of speech, and is the surging sentence pattern. The author simply summarizes the features of masculine beauty from the perspective of poetics at three levels:phonology, vocabulary and syntax. At the phonetic level, masculine beauty has two main features:1)using single rhyme, and 2)using plenty of plosive sounds of/p/,/t/and/k/.At the lexical level, masculine beauty has one main feature, which is the massive use of verb form.At the syntactic level, masculine beauty has five features:1)the use of paragraphs of parallel sentences,2)the use of imperatives,3)the ellipsis of the subject,4)the use of active voice, and 5)the use of short sentence and orderly sentences. From the above features,we can have a new and different understanding of masculine beauty. In Shuihu Zhuan, masculine beauty is first reflected in the verbs with plosive sound used in the description of fighting scenes. They strengthen the atmosphere of conflict and tension between the two sides of the fighting.Second,it is reflected in the massive use of verbs. Finally, masculine beauty is also reflected in the frequent use of some special sentences.Through the above analysis it can be learned that the whole Shuihu Zhuan has revealed a trend of masculinity, and masculine beauty is the most distinctive and important poetic feature of it.Shapiro's version can well reproduce the original poetic style from almost all the levels of phonology, vocabulary and syntax. In order to restore the Chinese-specific pronunciation in the source text,Shapiro chooses transliteration. In most cases,Shapiro uses literal translation in order to faithfully restore the special sentences in original text.Meanwhile,Shapiro also uses free translation when he translates some imperative sentences. However, the translation is not perfect.Due to the differences between English and Chinese,in the subject-omission sentence Shapiro has not been able to find the alternative sentence pattern of the original. He can only use short sentences and imperative sentences to make up for this regret. He successfully embodies the masculine beauty of the original work with combined use of various translation methods, and The Outlaws of the Marsh is a highly faithful version.
