| China is a country with the largest number of neighbouring countries in the world.After the Cold War,the relations between China and its neighbouring nations have undergone great changes;among these nations,some sustained friendly relations with China,while some others have experienced ups and downs,and still some others remained on bad terms with China.It is of great significance to construct a good peripheral environment for China?s development.The Chinese book Zhongguo Yu Zhoubian Zhongdeng Guojia Guanxi(A Quantitative Study of the Relations Between China and Its Middle-Sized Neighbouring Countries)by Yan Xuetong,et al.deeply analyzes the law of the development of relations between China and its five middle-sized neighbouring countries,which forecasts the trends of their future relations through a quantitative analysis method,representing an achievement of considerable reference value to China dealing with its bilateral relations and realizing its peaceful rise.There has been no English version of the book available yet,so the translation and its related analysis will be original and necessary.The book is a candidate listed for application for the projects supported by the Chinese Fund for the Humanities and Social Sciences.Its English translation will be conducive to the foreign transmission of the academic achievements made by Chinese scholars and further to academic exchanges between China and other countries.Up to now,it has not been rendered into English version,and therefore its English translation is both necessary and original.The object of translation of this translation project is Chapter One of the book,which is “Dingliang Hengliang Shuangbian Guanxi De Zuoyong,Dengji Gainian He Qishi”(Quantitative Measurement of Bilateral Relations: Practical Significance,Concept of Graded Relations,and Inspirations),with over ten thousand Chinese characters in total.This chapter mainly explores the law of bilateral relations development between China and its five middle countries(Korea,Vietnam,Pakistan,Australia and Indonesia)through a quantitative study and draws some inspirations from its quantitatively measuring China?s bilateral relations.On the basis of her translating experience,the translator writes her translation report,covering the introduction of the ST,the background,significance,and necessity of conducting the project,textual analysis of the Chinese original text,description of the translating process,case analysis and the conclusion drawn from her whole translating process.These parts constitute the content of her thesis.The writing of the text is featured by conciseness and explicit,strong in objective,logic,informative,and argumentative exposition,which indicates a typical academic writing style,belong to the category of expressionistic texts.In the process of translating the Chinese original text,on the basis of her analysis of it and the specific translation purpose,the translator formulates her overall translation principle,that is,to retain accurately the values,academic meaning,and ways of argumentation of the original text and meanwhile to make sure that the English version conforms to the features of the academic text in English so that it can be easily accessible to the target readership.As for her translation strategy,she adopts the basic strategy of non-literary oriented domestication strategy,which is complemented by foreignization.In regard to translating methods,she applies flexibly various translating methods on the lexical,syntactic,and textual level,to put into effect her translation principle and carry out her translation strategy.The global translation aim of the present project is at reaching the standard for publication of translated academic works in English,in the hope of reporting to the outside world the scholarly achievements made by contemporary Chinese scholars. |
