A Translation Report On The Pragmatics Of Translation (Chapter 3-4) Guided By Nida’s Functional Equivalence

The paper is a translation report based on the translation of chapter 3 and chapter 4 of the book The Pragmatics of Translation guided by Nida’s functional equivalence.The book is a collection of 13 papers related to translation by different authors,who explore translation from the view of pragmatics.It has no Chinese version so far.At the same time,it is a required reading book for many translation learners,so it is worthy of translating.In Chapter 3,the author Ernst-August Gutt mainly discusses the importance of changes in context in translation work and the notion of ‘translation’ itself.The author in Chapter 4,Juliane House,investigates the connection of politeness with translation.In line with the understanding and translation for the two chapters,the translator tries to analyze and conclude the difficulties in the translation process from the aspects of words,sentences and discourses.Overall,using the functional equivalence to instruct the translation process will provide some help for academic translation.It turns out that omission and division can be used to guide the academic translation at the word level;inversion and the change of voice are useful at the sentence level;Omission and division are helpful at the textual level.Last but not least,the translator hopes to learn more about the translation theories including politeness and relevance-theory and be increasingly familiar with the application of translation techniques under the guidance of the functional equivalence.At first,the content of the translation project is introduced.Later,the theory of Nida’s functional equivalence is presented,after which translation process and case analyses under the guidance of the theory are talked about.The conclusion is the last part,where the translator summarizes the whole translation project including problems encountered during the translation process.
