| In the late Qing Dynasty,magazines played a great role in spreading Western science and ideas in China.The East of Asia Magazine,covering topics of politics,history,culture,education,etc.,was an English magazine published in the late Qing Dynasty.Articles in this magazine were mostly written by Western missionaries with the contents related to the social conditions of China at that time.Therefore,they were of great reference value.The two selected articles in this translation practice are taken from The East of Asia Magazine(Special Educational Number),they are mainly about the educational conditions of the late Qing Dynasty under the influence of missionaries as well as the Western learning.The translation report focuses on the difficulties and solutions concerned in the translation of such historical texts.The difficulties are as follows: first,the background information about the history of the late Qing Dynasty is deficient;second,some terms are difficult to be translated because of their specific historical meanings;third,some complexed long sentences in the original text make it hard to guarantee the accuracy and fluency of translation.To overcome such difficulties,the following solutions are adopted: first,many books on the history and education of the late Qing Dynasty are read to get some background information as well as language style of the text;second,relative historical books,the Internet,as well as the theory of translation are refered to to help determine the translation of some terms;third,the translation should be read through and the sentence structure be reorganized in order to make it more acceptable for Chinese readers. |
