In recent years, multimodal discourse analysis from the social semiotic perspective mainly focuses on some hot genres, such as posters, cartoons, and advertisements.Multimodal discourse analysis of news is relatively rare. The thesis integrates functional grammar, visual grammar and image-verbiage relations into 3IS(the integration of verbal and visual meaning,Informational Level,Interactive Level, and Internal Structure Level;the relations of verbal and visual meaning similarity, specification, and supplement)—a proposed model for the present study.Under this model, qualitative and quantitative analyses are made of the verbalvisual news in The White House Snapshot(2015-2016),aiming to find out how the words and images convey meanings, how words and images are related, and how integrative meanings are conveyed by such relations. It is found that words in this news provide information through achieving functions. It is also found that images convey meanings through representational, interactive and compositional meanings.Last but not least, both supplement and specification relations are found in the text. However, the meanings of the news are not simply the sum of words and images. In supplement relation, the combined meaning is the organic integration of verbal and visual meaning. In specification relation, language itself can fully express meaning, with images serving as the anchorage, helping readers to find the information they are interested in quickly and directly. The implications of the present study lie mainly in two aspects.Theoretically, the proposed model—3IS could be employed to analyze the static verbal-visual multimodal texts.Practically,on the one hand, this thesis would help enhance people’s multiliteracies to a certain extent. On the other hand, the study may provide some hints for news editors, photographers and image designers.
