A Report On Chinese Translation Of Mahomet And His Successors(Chapter 1-4)

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the excerpt from Mahomet and His Successors,a biographical novel about the life of Mahomet and His successors,also a fabulous historical novel,written by Washington Irving,the founder of American literature.The translation report was based on the translating of the Introduction and the first four chapters of the second part of Mahomet and His Successors.This part is about the story after the death of Mahomet that his disciples continued to spread Islam for adhering to his legacy and expand the territory of Arabia.Combining the typical examples in the translation practice,this report discussed the strategies in thinking and solving the translation of the literary works with religious teachings and historical facts.Several difficult points and confusion in the translation practice had been summarized as fellow:How to present vividly the dramatic conflicts?How to translate the sensitive Culture-Loaded terms such as religious proper nouns?How to choose and weigh the relationship between the attitude of the translator and the original author in translation?Whether the translator should be loyal to the version constructed by the author or the basic historical facts?In order to solve such problems,the translator studied Relevance Theory and Convergence Principle and applied them to the translation practice,in an attempt to make the translation faithful to the original style,content,and charm to the most extent.
