This is a translation report on Translation: an advanced resource book by Basil Hatim and Jeremy Munday,of which Unit One,Two,Three and Four from Section B Extension are selected as the source text. The main feature of this book is to study translation from the perspective of linguistics.Unit One(What is translation?)mainly makes statements of the definitions of translation, the name of translation and its possible areas of research in Translation Studies.Unit Two(Translation strategies)mainly discusses the translation strategies and the arguments for and against translatability.Unit Three(The unit of translation)mainly makes an account of the definition and conception of the translation unit.Unit Four(Translation shifts)mainly presents the translation shifts between languages and its categories, and describes the two kinds of translation shifts model: level shifts and category shifts. Also it introduces translation procedures to study the translation shifts, which are divided into two methods: direct or literal translation and oblique translation. The original text is characterized with formal words and more long sentences for the academic style on translation theories. For that reason, the author, guided by ‘functional equivalence’ put forward by Nida, strives to convey the original information faithfully and accurately and make the target language consistent with the readers’ reading habits and expectations. Also, some translation techniques are applied to long sentences in the process of translation, mainly including translating words and phrases into short sentences in Chinese, sentence segmentation, exchanging orders of long sentences and changing the voices.Through this translation practice, the author has gained a more comprehensive and profound understanding of translation studies and translation activities.Translation is not just a simple conversion between languages, but an extremely complex activity, involving many fields and industries.Besides having a good command of languages,a translator also needs a master of translation theories and skills, profound knowledge and the ability to search information for better translations.
