D·H·Lawrence’s View On The Harmonious Relationship Between Men And Women

As a famous writer in the history of world literature in the early 20 th century,David Herbert Lawrence had a profound investigation and research on the relationship between wen and women,therefore,he was payed closed attention to.Women in Love,published in 1920,is one of Lawrence important works,as well as one of his most mature works in his writing career.Lawrence endeavored all his life to the creation of the works on psychological problems,for instance,love and the relationship between men and women.Meanwhile,Lawrence had a profound study on these psychological problems.The works of Lawrence reveal his own idea on the relationship between men and women healthily and truly,Lawrence enhance sex and love to the level of philosophy and aesthetics.In David Herbert Lawrence’s opinion,mechanical civilization repressed and distorted human’s nature,destroyed human’s integrity.This repression and distortion throw human beings into a desperate condition both physically and mentally.Therefore,Lawrence insisted that only by building a harmonious relationship between men and women,can we rescue the civilization and human beings which are destroyed by industrial society.Lawrence focused on these theme: how to maintain human’s integrity;how to maintain a harmonious and integrate relationship of the soul and the flesh;on the process of studying the healthy relationship between men and women and finally reach a harmonious relationship between men and women steadily.These opinions have been fully presented in his novel Women in Love.On the bases of his masterpiece Women in Love,this thesis has a profound research on the ideal relationship between men and women.In addition to the introduction and conclusion part,this thesis consists of three main parts.Chapter one introduces Lawrence’s theory of Blood-consciousness and the idea of Polarity and Balance.The theory of Blood-consciousness stimulates him escape from the old,tradition and destroyed industrial society to a new,harmonious society.A harmonious relationship between men and women is an ideal way to a perfect world and healthy human nature.Chapter two demonstrates the relationship of two couples,Hermione and Birkin,Gerald and Gudrun,Lawrence discovered the relationship between the two couples is lack of normality and harmony,which is not what Lawrence pursues,because Lawrence pursues a harmonious relationship between men and women with the combination of body and soul.Chapter three concludes that the relationship between Birkin and Ursula is like the Star-Equilibrium is what Lawrence has been pursuing in his life.In conclusion,Women in Love is a masterpiece on investigating the harmonious relationship between men and women.The relationship between Birkin and Ursula represents the harmonious relationship between men and women in Lawrence’s view.Meanwhile,on the basis of a balanced and harmonious relationship between men and women,Lawrence tried his best to find a way on how to maintain a harmonious relationship between men and women in capitalist society.
