This Thesis is a project report on the translation of the second chapter The Last Titan:A Life of Theodore Dreiser,a biography written by Jerome Loving.The title of the chapter is "The Very Bard of a City".It mainly describes the early experience of the protagonist Dreiser—How he went to Chicago to find a job,then left to attend Indiana University for a year and dropped out,and returned to Chicago to seek a living.It also makes reference to the "sudden awakening" of America,Chicago's exposure to modern civilization at the turn of the 20th century,and other social circumstances and religious situations,all of which cast deep influence on Dreiser.The fact that the source text is characterized by accuracy and precision means that it requires lots of background knowledge to conduct good translation.This is the major challenge of the work.In addition,many long sentences and passive voices are frequently used in the source text,which requires the translator to have good command of grammatical knowledge and logical thinking.Therefore,the skopos theory is used as the theoretical guidance during the translation of the project.Besides,many translation strategies and approaches are used to analyze and solve those difficulties,such as free translation,amplification,inversion and so on.The project aims to provide the Chinese readers with more knowledge about the life experience of Theodore Dreiser and the social background,which will definitely help understand his writings and the characteristics of naturalism profoundly.The translator concludes from the translation report that theoretical guidance and good command of bilingual language are indispensable and complimentary in translation.In addition,a wide range of knowledge and patience and perseverance are all necessary.The translator has gained rich experience and lessons in the process of translating,hoping to make greater progress in the future.
