A Study Of Conversational Implicature In The Harry Potter From The Perspective Of The Cooperative Principle

American linguist philosopher H.P.Grice figured out the Cooperative Principle in 1967.He believed that there are some rules when people make dialogues they must follow.During the communication,people always want to achieve the best effect as they understand and cooperate with each other.Therefore,he figured out four Cooperative Principle maxims: the maxim of quantity,the maxim of quality,the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner.To some degree,they can assure the exchange smoothly and successfully Grice realized that CP can't simply analyze from the inner structures(such as the perspective of phonetics,semantics and syntactics)of the utterance,but comprehend the context and relevance of the sentence to understand the true meaning or implied meaning of the speaker.In other words,the hearer has to comprehend the implied meaning of the speaker.Grice figured out that speakers always don't convey their true intention immediately,they always express them through violating the application of conversational maxims as they exchange with other people in daily communication,which is called Conversational Implicature.Grice put forward that when communicators talk with each other,they would flout one or some maxims of Cooperative Principle.Therefore,implicature thereby appear.Harry Potter series,were written by British female writer,Joanne Kathleen Rowling.One of the few famous English female writers in the modern time,Joanne Kathleen Rowling has completed a series of novels named Harry Potter in ten years from 1997 to 2007.Studies on Harry Potter are numerous.In the novel,JK Rowling(short for Joanne Kathleen Rowling)has view on friendship,love and a brand new magical world parallel with the real world.The work has attracted great attentions from scholars both British and other countries since it was published.The series composed of seven parts is an amazing work of widespread appeal.No matter how old you are,you will be appealed to this work.The language styles in her works along with strong narrative skills are thoroughly studies by many scholars around the world,while studies on the rich Conversational Implicature from the perspective of linguistics are rarely few.Why are the books so successful? What kind of role does the Conversational Implicature here play in the series on the basis of CP and PP? How can the implicature in Harry Potter promote the plot development? These questions will be analyzed in this thesis in the later parts.There are two research questions in this paper should be solved:1.What the conversational implcatures can be produced by flouting the maxims of the CP from the main characters' conversation in the novel Harry Potter?2.From the Conversational Implicatures,what individuality can be concluded by J.K Rowling to make the characters more and more vivid?Thus,as a qualitative case study,attempts to explore the Conversational Implicature of dialogues in Harry Potter by applying Cooperative Principle and a few Politeness Principle,in order to probe the way of literary analysis from perspective of pragmatics.This paper intends to use these two theories of pragmatics — the Cooperative Principle and the Politeness Principle to analyze the conversation in Harry Potter.
