| Since the “cultural turn” in the 1990 s,translation studies from the cultural perspective have become more and more profound, and fruitful. The combination of gender and translation is also an important part of bond between culture and translation studies after the “cultural turn”,and is also an increasingly prominent development direction of the current translation studies.(Li Hongyu,2007)There appeared a large number translation studies from gender perspectives, but most of them applied a qualitative analysis method of a small number of cases, which were full of subjective judgment. In view of this, the corpus-based translation studies approach from the descriptive angle is used to conduct an analysis with the combination of quantitative and qualitative method of the Women in White, which makes the translation studies more credible and the research conclusion more reliable and valid. The main purpose of this thesis are: Based on self-built small parallel corpus, the differences of language use in translation of Ye Dongxin, the female translator and two male translators Pan Huangling and Zhuang Kaixun of The Woman in White compared, the male translators are compared from the gender angle in order to find female identity of Ye Dongxin’s version. The research is based on the following assumption: 1)Compared with two male translators, does the female identity of Ye Dongxin affect her translation of The Woman in White? 2)Is there linguistic evidence in the Chinese versions of Ye Dongxin that shows the influences of feminist thoughts when tested by quantitative corpus approach, and if there is,how does it show? 3)How does these evidence supply for the gender effects on her translation? The corpus includes the original of The Woman in White and its three translations by Ye Dongxin, the female translator, and two male translators,Pan Huanglin and Zhuang Kaixun.Gender-marked nouns, the vulgar words and adjectives of female image rendering on lexical level and adding of expletives and translation of passive sentences with female receptor subjects on syntactic level are explored and analyzed.Through the study,it can be found that compared with male translators,Ye Dongxin, the female translator, tries to avoid belittling and discrimination against women in the translation of gender-marked nouns, the vulgar words and adjectives of female image rendering on lexical level, which reflects the female intentions through creativetranslation method;Second, adding of expletives and translation of passive sentences with female receptor subjects on syntactic level shows strong feminine qualities. For most dimensions examined,it is found that female characteristics, especially Ye’ s perspectives on female, has great impact on her translation, while her translation still embodies features of female language designed by the patriarchal society. Therefore, both the female awareness and her characteristics as a traditional woman are influential to her translation. |
