Listening comprehension ability is indispensable for English learners,it plays an important role in English learning and daily communication.The improvement of listening comprehension ability can improve learners' English comprehensive ability and daily communicative ability,however,English learners pay more attention to the improvement of writing ability and reading ability,while ignore their listening ability,at the same time,the traditional listening teaching mode,that is to say,the teacher play the listening materials-students listen the listening materials-the teacher check the answers,which makes learners fall into a passive learning state.This kind of teaching mode restrict the students' interest and creativity and lead to the teaching proficiency become more and more low.In view of this problem,this paper tries to analyze the role of schema theory in college English teaching and find a more effective method of college English listening teaching.Schema theory emphasizes that background knowledge plays an important role in the process of listening comprehension,and it can be divided into three categories:language schema,content schema and formal schema.Schema theory believes that listening comprehension is an interactive information processing process,including bottom-up and top-down information processing models,based on these models,listening comprehension is the process of the interaction between the learner's background knowledge and the listening materials.In the process of listening comprehension,learners need to activate their background knowledge,to combine their background knowledge and the listening material to understand new materials.The degree of activation of the learners' background knowledge determines the depth of the learners understanding the listening materials.So,applying the schema theory to listening process can makes the learners' learning process more positive.According to the above background,this paper mainly studies three questions:1.Can the application of schema theory in college English listening teaching improve college students' listening ability?2.Can the application of schema theory in college English listening teaching improve college students' interest in listening learning?3.If the application of schema theory in college English teaching can improve students'listening ability,what kind of listening material does the schema strategy have most obvious effect?The methodology of the paper is based on experiment and supplemented by the method of questionnaires,choose two non English major parallel classes students of grade 2015 in Northwest Minzu University as the research subjects,regard one as EC,the other as CC.Before the 16 weeks teaching of the two classes,the author use the listening material of CET4 of June 2015 to test the listening ability of the students in EC and CC respectively to ensure their listening level is the same.The EC use the teaching method of schema theory,namely followed the steps of schema construction,schema activation,schema construction;While the CC adapt the traditional teaching method,followed the method of playing listening material,listening and checking the answer.After 16 weeks of listening teaching,the author use CET4 listening material of December 2015 to have a post test.Finally the author use the SPSS to calculate and analyze the data of pretest and post test,through the analysis to determine whether the application of schema theory to college English listening teaching can improve college students' English listening ability;if it can improve students' listening ability,it's function to which type of question is more obvious?Through using questionnaire,the author mainly want to understand the students' level of understanding of the schema theory and emotional attitude of experimental class and control class to English listening.These studies further confirm that the schema theory has important significance to the teaching of English listening,either from the students' listening ability and interest in learning,or from the aspect of teacher' s innovation work.Schema theory has a lot of research space.
