This is a project report on the translation of three papers elected from Japan Labor Review,an English-language quarterly published in Japan.The titles of these three papers are as follows:The Current Issues on Foreign Workers in Japan,Impacts of International Migration on the Labor Market in Japan and The Economic Crisis and Foreign Workers in Japan:Why Does Japan Treat Migrant Workers as Second Class Citizens?All of them discuss the problems relating to foreign workers in Japan from different perspectives,and feature professionalism,objectiveness and logicality as academic papers.Translating these papers can not only provide reference for domestic scholars who study relevant issues but also help Chinese authorities gain useful experience from Japan when making similar policies and laws.Moreover,In terms of translation study,this report serves to better understanding of the practice and theories of translating academic paper.By providing different methods for translators dealing with texts of different types,Newmark’s translation theory,with communicative and semantic translation as its core,can well guide the practice of translating a specific style.Therefore,the author of this report adopts the methods of both communicative translation and semantic translation,and makes the degree of emphasis on SL or TL in line with the main function of the translated texts,attempting to convey the original information accurately to the target readers.The application value of Newmark’s theory in academic translation is analyzed at lexical,syntactic and textual level based on typical cases in this report.It is found from the translating experience and the translated works that Newmark’s theory can be adopted to effectively guide academic translation,and in order to deal with the academic translation skillfully,the translators must possess appropriate qualities such as writing ability,good understanding of theoretical knowledge and rich storage of professional knowledge.
