| Compared with general news headlines,the maritime news headlines have unique language characteristics.Therefore,learning syntactical features of maritime news headlines is of great help in improving readers’ efficiency in reading maritime news.The Maritime News Headlines Corpus(MNHC)and the General News Headlines Corpus(GNHC)established by the writer,compose the data used in this thesis.Combined with the theories of some linguists such as Quirk,this thesis is aimed at an overall analysis of maritime news headlines in terms of syntactical features from five aspects:sentence length,sentence structures,sentence tenses,sentence voices and omission in sentences.The findings are stated as follows:1.The average sentence length of maritime news headlines is shorter than general news headlines and the 7-9 words sentences are most frequently used.2.The simple sentences are more frequently used in maritime news headlines than those in general news headlines;In terms of seven basic patterns of simple sentences,the SVO,SVOA and SV are the most frequently used in maritime news headlines;the SVOA,SVO and SVA are the most frequently used in general news headlines.In terms of multiple sentences,the maritime news headlines have a less using frequency compared with general news headlines.3.The simple present tense has the highest using frequency in maritime news headlines for the purpose of representing the timeliness of a piece of news.Additionally,in maritime news headlines,the expression of to do is frequently used to replace be to do for saving space.And the form of will do in future tense is less used.4.In the aspect of sentence voices,the active voice is more frequently applied than the passive voice both in maritime news headlines and general news headlines.5.As for the omission in sentences,maritime news headlines bear no differences with general news headlines,both the word of be are frequently omitted.This research extends the range on the study of news headlines and the findings have a referential significance for people engaged in shipping industry. |
