The Effect Of Speaker's Expertise And Listener's Personal Involvement On Socially Shared Retrieval-induced Forgetting

Cuc,Koppel,& Hirst(2007)found that the speaker's selective retrieval of studied materials can not only cause forgetting on his own memories(WI-RIF,WithinIndividual Retrieval-Induced Forgetting),but also similar RIF on the listeners' memories.This RIF associated with the listeners was called Socially Shared RIF(SSRIF).The key for SS-RIF emerge was the listeners' concurrent,covert retrieve with the speaker.There are many factors that can influence the emergence of SS-RIF,some of them,such as the way listeners monitoring the speaker's utterances,the social relationship between the speaker and the listener work by influencing the degree the listeners' concurrent,covert retrieve with the speaker.Three experiments was designed to explore how social relationships between the speaker and the listener,focusing specifically on the speaker's expertise,and the personal involvement of the listener,moderate the SS-RIF.We adopted a 2(topic type:controversial and uncontroversial)×2(expertise condition: expert and nonexpert)×3(practice type: Rp+,Rp-and Nrp)mixed design in Experiment 1,with practice type as within-subject factor,expertise condition and topic type as betweensubject factor,the dependent factor is the recall rates of every practice type.In Experiment 2,we adopted a 2(consistency of attitude: consistent and inconsistent)×2(expertise condition: expert and non-expert)×3(practice type: Rp+,Rpand Nrp)mixed design,with the consistency of attitude as between-subject factor.The Experiment 3 was on the basis of Experiment 2,with subjects in high personal involvement arousing by a imagining task.Here are the conclusions we got in this research:(1)Whether the listener's attitude toward the controversial topic is consistent with the speaker will influence SS-RIF,but the speaker's expertise will influence this effect.(2)the listens' personal involvement will influence SS-RIF.Compared to low personal involvement,listeners who were in high personal involvement may retrieval“beyond” the speaker,and eliminate the SS-RIF.
