A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety is an autobiography written by Jimmy Carter,the former president of the United States.The whole text contains eight chapters,about 80,000 words,in which Carter recalls his life at the age of ninety in the way of self-narration by describing his childhood life,his naval service experience,the process of his inauguration as the president and his life after leaving the White House.The autobiographical text belongs to the genre of biography,which has authenticity and some informative favor.The translator has completed the translation of chapter 6,and finishes this report based on this translation.The translation of the source text is of great significance for readers to fully understand Carter’s ruling and objectively evaluate Carter’s policies,economic measures and military disposition.And it provides relevant historical materials for readers to know about the American national conditions and world political situation in the 1980 s.The source text contains a large number of major historical events and precious historical materials,so according to Reiss and Newmark’s text typology,the source text is mainly considered as the informative text.Under the guidance of Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation,the translator thinks that the translation of the source text should be loyal to the original content,and on this basis achieves the maximum communication with readers.Combined with some examples,the translator undertakes case analysis of the translation strategies and skills,mainly including two parts.First is lexical translation.The translator uses literal translation and annotation in the translation of words.Second is syntactic integration.The translator adopts restructuring and amplification to analyze and integrate syntactic structures from the textual perspective.Last is the summary of this translation practice and discusses the translator’s understanding and experience in this translation practice.Through the translation of the source text,the translator can accumulate translation experience,and deepen understanding of translation theories.In addition,the translator hopes this translation report will partly provide some guidance for the translation practice of autobiographical texts.
