A Project Report On Translation Of 2016 Report On The Work Of Jiangsu Government

Located on the Yangtze Plain and seashore of the Yellow Sea and densely covered with rivers and lakes, enjoying geographic advantages for both land and water carriage, Jiangsu province is regarded as one of the most suitable provinces of China’s coastal regions for developing international trade and business. Since the beginning of China’s reform and opening up to the outside world,foreigners and overseas capitals are continuously attracted to Jiangsu for its superior geographic condition, well-educated human resources and highly-developed economy. Recent years,investors are more eager to be acquainted with present development situation and potential of Jiangsu province. Under this circumstance, Report on the Work of Jiangsu Government, the most authoritative and qualified official archive, should have played a full role as publicity material of Jiangsu. However, little access is opened to the official English edition of Report on the work of Jiangsu Government and unofficial translation studies obviously lay behind and cannot meet the requirement.Translation of Report on the Work of the Government delivered at the Fourth Session of the Twelfth Provincial People’s Congress of Jiangsu is served as the study object of this report. In the light of text typology theory, government work report mainly belongs to expressive text whose authority is put on the top priority. However,when translated into a publicity material whose translation purpose is to inform and touch the readers, its informative and vocative function should be emphasized.Therefore, the basis of translation process is to eliminating potential barriers of understanding and accurately transmitting information with target language. After a deep analysis of the major issues and difficulties encountered during the translating process of this report, the author takes proper methods including literal and free translation, annotation, addition, conversion and information extraction and syntactic reorganization, etc. to resolve these difficulties, namely Chinese-featured words ,special Chinese sentence style and hedges. Hopefully, this report can provide some suggestions and solutions for the translation of government work report and the author’s ability could be improved during this translation practice.
