| The translation of English for science and technology (EST) plays a crucial role in the development of society, economy, culture and science and technology. In order to achieve effectiveness of information exchange, translators need to attach greater importance to accuracy, fluency and preciseness of clause translation in the process of EST translation.Based on the translation of Chapter One of an environmental engineering monograph, Introduction to Environmental Engineering, this translation report mainly focuses on clause translation in environmental engineering text.Environmental engineering English is a special type of EST, which, in terms of vocabulary and syntax, has characteristics and professionalism of its own. The report,with an analysis of the linguistic features of environmental engineering English,elaborates how to apply Nida’s functional equivalence theory to the translation of attributive clause, adverbial clause and appositive clause and what translation strategies to be adopted in the translation of environmental engineering text.This report is composed of four chapters. Chapter One describes the translation task, which includes introduction to the task, introduction to the source text and process of translation. In Chapter Two, Nida’s functional equivalence theory is briefly introduced with an analysis of the definition of the theory and the reason to choose it. Chapter Three focuses on some typical examples to demonstrate how the translation strategies of clauses are adopted in actual translating of the environmental engineering text under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. The last chapter summarizes the lessons and the deficiencies in the process of translation practice. |
