Since 2014,the Chinese IP film has risen up.IP is short for Intellectual Property,and IP film refers to films adapted from quality works in other cultural and entertainment industry.But IP film seeks for contents with Internet gene and is rooted in popular culture,which is distinctly different from the traditional film adaptation.Based on literature analysis,comparative study and specific cases,this paper will analyze the Chinese IP film phenomenon standing in the perspective of popular culture,and focus on cultural characteristics of the IP film and its value.IP film with strong entertainment and consumer characteristics is a kind of cultural phenomenon produced by the infiltration of popular culture and consumer culture into the film industry.Firstly,the entertainment strategy of IP film brings the audiences pleasure,and meets the audiences’ emotional desire in the form of dreaming.Secondly,IP film tries to spread consumer culture,stimulates the audiences’ desire to consume through the symbolic consumption.IP film not only meets the demand of the public entertainment,but also enables the producers to obtain substantial commercial benefits.Therefore,IP film has become a hot phenomenon in Chinese film market.It enlivens the film market and promotes the improvement of the film industry chain,while narrowing the relationship between film and pan entertainment industry.However,IP film excessively pursue entertainment and commercialization leading to many negative effects,like squeezing the living space of outstanding original works and serious films,eliminating the elite culture.Aiming for having a profound understanding,this thesis attempts to explore the cultural essence of IP film.Based on this,we will also deduce how to make the IP film to seek a balance between entertainment and culture,and promote the healthy development of China’s film industry.This paper is divided into four parts:In the first part,we mainly describe the research background,significance,literature reviews,and theoretical basis,etc.This part also defines IP and IP film.To create greater business value,IP film is not simply cross-media adaptation,but expanding the audience under the capital operation by entertainment and business strategies.The second part overviews the phenomenon of domestic IP film,analyzes the current situation and characteristics of five types of IP film,and explores the reasons for the rise of IP film.There are five reasons: First,the rise of mass popular culture has provided the cultural background for the birth of IP film;Second,the network generation,the main film audiences,has provided the market demand for IP film;Third,media integration has provided an operational platform for IP cross-media narratives;Fourth,Internet companies have entered the film industry bringing a new look to the entire film market;Finally,a lot of capital have entered into the film industry directly promoting the rise of IP film.The third part deeply studies the cultural characteristics of IP film.IP film follows the rules of popular culture.Specifically,there are two features.For one thing,IP film meets audiences’ emotional needs and brings happiness to audiences via the entertainment strategy.At the same time,IP film weaves the beautiful dreamland to help audiences to achieve their imaginary satisfaction.For another thing,the prevalence of IP film is a concentrated expression of consumer culture.In order to obtain commercial interests,IP film not only actively spread consumer culture,but also stimulate the audience’s desire consumption temptation through the symbolic consumption.Based on the analysis of cultural characteristic of IP film,we can understand the essence of IP film thoroughly.In the fourth part,we summarize the positive and negative effects of IP film in the Chinese film market,and put forward some reasonable suggestions for the development of Chinese IP film.First,we must strengthen the cultural responsibility of film creators.Second,it is necessary to improve China’s film industry chain to strengthen the industrialization of IP film from the inside.Third,it is important to promote the development of the entire pan entertainment culture industry.Fourth,there should be some giant companies leading the development of IP film.Fifth,it is necessary to strengthen the quality of the original IP training.Only obtaining the balance between the entertainment,commercialization and culture in IP film,can we push forward the healthy development of China’s film industry.
