A Report On C-E Translation Of Tourism Publicity Materials Of Yuanling County

Yuanling County is subordinated to Huaihua City,Hunan Province.It has always been known as the portal to Xiangxi(Western Hunan)and it boasts numerous scenic spots and historic sites.With the fast development of the tourism at home and abroad,Yuanling has met with a good opportunity to develop its tourism.Born and brought up in Huaihua,I(the author of this report)want to make some contribution to the social economic development of my hometown.Therefore,with the consent of the Tourism Bureau of Yuanling County,I selected some tourism publicity materials in the tourism website of Yuanling County as the source text of this translation practice.The aim is to help develop the English version of the website to propagandize the scenic spots and folk culture of Yuanling to foreign tourists.As tourism publicity material,the source text has the informative function and vocative function,designed to induce people to travel to Yuanling and go sightseeing here.The features of the text are as follows: the words in respect of sacrificial culture,architectural art and Nuo opera are fuzzy in meaning;some sentences are loose in structure and difficult to understand;some contents are too fustian,and the long lists of statistic data,the lines of the librettos and some incantations are complicated and redundant.In order to let the translated version better realize the vocational and informational function of the source text,under the guidance of Functionalist Translation Theory,I have translated the text by adopting such methods as free translation,literal translation with notes,omission,compiling translation and analogy to solve the main lexical,syntactic and textual difficulties met with during the translation process.This report can be divided into four chapters.The first is an introduction to the source and significance of this translation practice and the analysis of the source text.The second is an introduction to the translating process,which contains three steps: preparation before the translation,translating progress and checking and revising after the translation.The third is the analysis of some examples about how to overcome the difficulties in doing the translation.Finally,the fourth is the conclusion of the translation practice.
