In 1775, the North American War of independence broke out. Due to the lack of strength, the United Kingdom recruited mercenaries from some German states for the war, the German mercenaries involved in almost every conflict in the American Revolutionary War.They were well experienced and professional in military; they were loyal, especially have a sense of honor; they were brave and disciplined, played an important role in helping the British to suppress the North American independence movement.In order to defend the freedom and independence of the country they settled, the German Americans actively participated in the war of independence. They conducted propaganda for the revolution, set up and joined the army against the British, made outstanding contribution for the independence of the United States.Some European countries provided assistance or indirect support for the American War of independence because of their own national interests or hostility to the British.There were many Germans in French reinforcements, known as the "Lauzun Legion"which was composed of a large number of German people, "Zweibrucken Legion", and Baron John Dekalbu who once served in the French army and so on.Prussian emperor Friedrich the great joined the armed neutrality alliance,took a non-cooperative attitude to the United Kingdom’s mercenaries recruitment in Germany,his policy also indirectly helped the cause of the American people’s war of independence.In this war, the Germans either acted in different and even opposite camps, or had an indirect effect on the cause of American independence through their own policies,attitudes,thus they played a different role in history,which caused different effects to the American War of independence.
