Translation Of Social Scientific Texts From The Perspective Of Social Semiotics

Challenging the Monolingual Mindset, co-authored by 16 scholars and compiled by the linguistic experts John Hayeke and Yvette Slaughter from the University of Melbourne, mainly introduces global language application, polices and environment. Under the guidance of the socio-semiotic approach to translation, the author of this report translated the second and third chapters of the first part of the book and completed this report with its focus on the reproduction of the referential meaning, linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning of the source text. The part excerpted from Challenging the Monolingual Mindset is about the transformation of the language system in Singapore, and the role and development of English as an international language from a multilingual and pluricentric perspective.This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the source text, the background and the significance of the research, with the selected text analyzed. Chapter Two describes the translation process. The third chapter explains the socio-semiotic approach to translation and explores its applicability in the translation. Part four, through some typical sentences from the source text, exemplifies the application of socio-semiotic approach to translation.The last part points out the reflections and shortcomings of the translator’s while-after translation.
