| Doomsday Hotel,Children of Darkness and a Testament to My Brother were three new novels which Wong BikWan had published from 2011 to 2014 in a row after a 7-year-pause.In Doomsday Hotel,Wong Bik Wan portrayed a Macao hotel which had experienced vicissitude in about one century in a concise and calm attitude.She adapted a view of the colonizers,finishing a colonial story in the post-colonial era.In Children of Darkness,Wong focused on the subaltern group in Wan Chai and sketched an image of them of later 20 th century in Hong Kong.A Testament to My Brother was an autobiographical work,the prototype of character and life experience of main characters could be found in real life.It was a “dawn blossom plucked at dusk” after the author entered her middle age.Compared to the previous works of hers,they had some similar features in the scope of content and style while also indicated some breakthroughs and innovations respectively.The three novels were the subjects investigated and this thesis would mainly adopt the methods of close reading and Post-colonialism.There were three chapters in this thesis.Chapter 1,the Continuation of themes,focused on the subject matters of these three novels.It summarized three significant themes from the works;they are Third Spaces,sketch for the subalterns and the form of family.This chapter discussed the continuations and vibrations of the themes in three latest novels.The name of Chapter 2 was the Life Experiences of Protagonist.It generally divided main characters into three kinds which were the colonizers,the pessimistic fallen ones and the vagabond figures.This chapter centered in the leading roles,trying to analyze and evaluate them and investigates the connotations of these novels.Chapter 3,the Multiple Attempts to Narration Languages was a study of the language usages in three novels while each one had a distinctive feature.Doomsday Hotel’s was obscure and indefinite as the text was consisted of several kinds of languages.Children of Darkness was a successful text of dialect writing.And a Testament to My Brother accomplished a new mode to convey narrative rhythms. |
