This thesis is a practice report of English-Chinese and Chinese-English consecutive interpreting task which was done by the author for Lanzhou Second People’s Hospital and Hvidovre Hospital. The conference was basically a work report about FTS(Fast Track Surgery)given by the experts from Lanzhou Second People’s Hospital.During the interpreting process, the author faced a series of problems such as high information density surpassed cognitive load and thus caused lacking of concentration;paying more attention to listening and analysis than note-taking and poor short-term memory due to brain overload. In the review of the interpreting process, the author tried to use Gile’s Effort Models to analyze the problems and found out the root causes were imbalance of effort allocation during the listening and analysis stage and overpressure in short-term memory. Then the author refers to the problem classification method of Gile’s Comprehension Equation and analyzes the major problem triggers of consecutive interpreting performance mainly from two categories: linguistic knowledge including terminology, information density and syntax and extra-linguistic knowledge including subject knowledge and interpreting context. It is suggested that Gile’s Effort Model and Comprehension Equation could assist interpreters better prepare for their interpreting tasks and help readers better comprehend the process of interpreting.Through the description of the interpreting task and case study, the author found out that in order to reduce the burden of effort coordination in listening, analysis and understanding, the interpreter should accumulate and make full use of linguistic knowledge as well as extra-linguistic knowledge to strengthen the understanding of source language. In light of the above-mentioned theories and discussions in the case study, means of improving interpreting performance are also discussed in hope to help interpreters to better allocate effort and improve interpreting performance.
