The translation report is based on Chinese-English translation on dietary customs excerpted from Folk Science and Technology of the Achang Ethnic Group, written by Professor Qing Ying of Yunnan Agricultural University. The book mainly introduces the culture with the characteristics of the Achang people, including farming, diet, costume, architecture and handcrafts. The translation is about dietary customs(P89-98)involving religion, farming, festivals and life rituals. The text is abundant in culturally–loaded expressions characteristic of the minority group and culture-specific words. How to translate these words accurately is the main purpose as well as a big challenge of this translation practice. To convey the source text faithfully to the target readers and keep the unique features at the same time, the translator adopts Peter Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation,as the theoretic guides.Newmark mentions that accuracy and economy are the two qualities in translation, and that they can be achieved only through communicative translation and semantic translation. In his Approaches to Translation,Newmark respectively defines semantic translation as “attempts to render,as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language allow, the exact contextual meaning of the original”,and communicative translation as “attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original”(Newmark,2001:39).In some case studies, the translator analyses how to apply translation theories to choosing appropriate methods, like free translation, literal translation, transliteration and transliteration with annotation, and techniques, like restructuring, amplification and omission,in the process of the translation practice.Through the practice, the translator accumulates experience in translating culturally-loaded words and enhances her translation competence.
