In 1985,Halliday first proposed grammatical metaphor theory(hereafter referred to as GM)in his published book The Introduction to Functional Grammar.Since then, more and more scholars applied this theory to the analysis of different discourses, such as newspapers, political speech, technical discourses, academic discourses and so on.But few previous scholars applied GM theory to the tourism discourses, especially to the study of English travel guide(hereafter referred to as TG).With the current rapid development of the tourism industry, tourism has become a pursuit of fashion in the life.People collect travel information through various means, and the TG has become an important reference before the travel. The study of the TG has become a topic that scholars urgently need to focus on.On the theoretical framework of GM,this paper calculates the number and frequency of each type of GM in the book Lonely Planet: Beijing to analyze English TG discourse from three aspects: ideational GM,interpersonal GM and textual GM,and explores the distribution and realizations of different types of GM in English TG discourse as well as their respective functions. It is found that there exists GM phenomenon in English TG.The ideational GM increases the density of words and enhances the credibility of the article through the realization of transitivity process and nominalization; The interpersonal GM takes the responsibility by explicit subjective and improves the objectivity by explicit objectivity in metaphor of modality, and narrows the distance between writer and reader by imperative mood in metaphor of mood. The textual GM emphasizes the key points and maintains the consistency of the article through metaphorical theme structure and metaphorical information structure.
