A Discourse Study On The Narrative Of A Young Female Scholar Based On A Case Study

As a majority of EFL teaching faculty in universities,young female scholars have been studied from a host of disciplines,such as psychology and pedagogy,yet much less from linguistics,let alone examined from the angle of exploring and manipulating the evaluative resources by this target group.Therefore,the present research aims to adopt the appraisal theory to find out the answer.The present thesis intends to explore the evaluation resource of a young female scholar’s narrative from the perspective of appraisal theory,which is a case study.It aims to give a glimpse of the attitude of such a target group in light of semantics within SFG.Major findings of the paper are shown below: 1)In the narration,the young female scholar intends to employ more evaluative resources from Attitude system,accounting for 54.4%,Engagement system ranks second by 23% and last comes the Graduation by 22.6%.2)The extensive adoption of attitude assessment presumably indicates the participant’s eagerness to share and publicize the experiences of the target group — female scholars in the university,both achievement and predicament.3)Engagement system of appraisal theory holds a proportion of nearly one fourth,showing the participant puts emphasis upon objectivity and negotiation in an effort to reach solidarity with the listener.4)The participant employs much resource from the Graduation,probably due to the expressiveness and enthusiasm from this female scholar.The major significance of the study consists in offering the original insights into examining the evaluative resources manipulated by a typical female scholar.It does shed light on gaining deeper understanding of this target group,compared with the quantitative method mostly employed before.However,it is up to the future study to enrich the number of informants to further strengthen the ecological values.
