| As an important member of the modern orchestras in the woodwind section,flute has a long history andabundant connotations of the humanities.During this long history of development,from the evolution of bone flutes to the national musical instruments in the early Middle Ages,until the Renaissance,the flute has become a wind instrument for the military bans and the city musicians,and then can be regarded as a veritable band instrument.However the most significant reform occurred in the late half of the 17 thcentury,a group of French craftsmen and performers produced for the first time a wooden one-keyed transverse flutethat is known as “Baroque flute”.Benefit from the more accurate holes,the intonation of the “Baroque flute” has been greatly ameliorated over those of its predecessors,and also,the joints of the tube can be freely pulled up to adjust the pitch.With these refinements,the “Baroque flute” has been recognized by the music scene as the standard mode in the first half of the18 th century.The improved flute,after having achieved an important position,obtained an unprecedented prosperity regardless of the professional performers or quantity of the compositions.This master’s thesis consists of four parts.The first part give a detailed introduction on the shape changes of the flute before the 17 th century,showing the differences of the shape exists in different periods.Comparing to the flute in the past,the second part aims to explain the progress of the baroque flute from the tone,range,intonation and the performance techniques.The third part presents the musical style,several great musicians and some excellent compositions in baroque period;analyzing the differences between the baroque flute and the modern flute to indicate the disadvantages of the baroque flute.In the last part,based on the descriptions of the baroque flute’s revitalization and the prospect of the future development of the flute,the artistic value of the baroque flute will be reflected profoundly. |
