An Analysis Of Sports News Headlines Of People’s Daily Online From The Perspective Of Systemic Functional Linguistics

Analyzing news texts from the perspective of linguistics has aroused wide attention,and as the headlines are crucial to the whole news report,it should also become a big concern.As one type of news,sports news has its unique features,and with the development of social economy,sports news holds a closer and closer relationship with people,which has become an important embodiment of the comprehensive national strength.Therefore,this thesis intends to analyze the sports news headlines.The paper focuses on analyzing sports news headlines of People’s Daily Online with Halliday’s three Meta-functions theory,discussing how the theory is applied and its distribution in the headlines.Through quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,the paper conducts a statistic analysis and has an explication of the result.In ideational meta-function,the sports news headlines are analyzed both in transitivity system and voice system.In transitivity system,material processes are the most frequently used,and then the relational processes.Mental processes and verbal processes constitute almost the same proportion,existential processes and behavioral processes take up little proportion.In voice system,non-middle voices are used much more than middle voices;and in non-middle voices,active voices are used far more than passive voices.In interpersonal meta-function,the headlines are analyzed in terms of speech function and mood system.In speech function,giving roles are much more than demanding roles;information shares more proportion than goods and services.In the four speech functions,statement functions share the most proportion,command and question functions take up a little,and offer functions are not used.In mood system,declarative mood is the most frequently used,then the imperative mood,interrogativeas well as exclamative mood are used little.In textual meta-function,thematic structures are used to analyze the sports news headlines.In all the types of themes,the ratio of simple themes is the largest,of multiple themes is extremely small.And unmarked themes constitute a bit more than marked themes.As for the forms,noun themes share the largest proportion,then verbal themes,and the ratio of preposition themes is the smallest.This thesis attempts to study the sports news headlines of People’s Daily Online from a new perspective,aiming at offering some relevation for the composition as well as the interpretation of sports news headlines.
