Representation Of Interpersonal Metafunction Of Dialogue Translation In The Chinese Versions Of Sons And Lovers

The representation of dialogues’ translation in novel is very critical to the appreciation of a novel.No matter where dialogues are,there is always Interpersonal Metafunction followed.It is widely known for us that both English and Chinese have their own various linguistic devices to embody Interpersonal Metafunction,thus making great difficulties in representing the original Interpersonal Metafunction of the dialogues in novel.However,this theme,in a very long period,is usually neglected.Therefore,how to represent Interpersonal Metafunction in the translation of dialogues deserves to be studied deeply.This thesis is devoted to exploring the differences of the Interpersonal Metafunction between English and Chinese with the method of contrastive study,mainly from the perspective of Mood system and Modality system,aiming to solving these two following questions:1.From the perspective of Mood system,what are the main differences in the realization ofInterpersonal Metafunction between English and Chinese,and what measures should be taken to deal with these differences in the dialogue translation of Sons and Lovers?2.From the perspective of Modality system,what are the main differences in the realization of Interpersonal Metafunction between English and Chinese,and what measures should be taken to deal with these differences in the dialogue translation of Sons and Lovers?Though the contrastive study between English and Chinese on Mood and Modality system and their translation strategies,two conclusions can be drawn.On Mood system,there exit lots of similarities between English and Chinese in Mood types,while there exist many differences in Moodstructures.These various Mood structures lead to various kinds of realization in Moods.On Modality system,modal operators and modal adjunctsare the two key elements to represent the Interpersonal Metafunction in language.As to most English modal expressions,their counterparts can be found in the Chinese language.This thesis hopes to be conducive in deepening the readers’ understanding of the novel Sons and Lovers and the Chinese versions of it,and give some enlightenments to the representation of Interpersonal Metafunction between Chinese and English language.
