Over the past decade, the research findings of modern Chinese literature can be described as a splendid scene.Starting from their respective research field,Many scholars such as GuoYanli,Yuan Jin and Liu Na,etc.put forward the enlightening insights on the literary ecology of this period. However, the central city discussed in these results was Shanghai. It is a pity that the exploration of modern literature in Chengdu is rare in the voluminous books and papers.Sichuan,as one of the most important inland provinces in China,is often called “the land of abundance” and its literature and culture should be paid more attention. On the other hand, with the gradual infiltration of Western ideology and culture as well as the development of social productive forces in Sichuan province,Chengdu has gradually completed the transformation from agricultural society to industrial and commercial society since the end of nineteenth century and the beginning of twentieth century. After the revolution of 1911,the social environment has had a greater change.Chengdu literature has kept up with the pace of the time and taken on a new look.As the most popular public newspaper in Chengdu,<Sichuan Gazette·Entertainment> which contained rich content with the multiple refraction phenomenon has surely become an ideal breakthrough in the exploration of Chengdu literature in the early Republic of China. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter discusses the formation of civil society and public sphere in Chengdu in the early years of the Republic of China as well as the founded conditions of the <Entertainment> during the great social change. The second chapter discusses how the literati of Chengdu in the early Republic of China implemented the intention of constructing the modern nation-state by using the public opinions such as <Entertainment> and the "marginal criticism mode".In the third chapter, combined with the text and based on the physical space of Chengdu in the early Republic of China, the "Modernity" perception about new things in the secular life is discussed. These modern experience changed Chengdu people’s thought. Thus, views of science were established, female consciousness was awakened, the idea of free love was further germinated and the concept of education was also changed.By using Bourdieu’s "Field" and "Habitus" theory and analysis of <Entertainment>,the fourth chapter discusses the changes of literature style of Chengdu in fiction, drama and prose,in which the greatest change is that the literary language has gradually changed from classical Chinese to vernacular language in the great historical changes. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper and in this part,an unfinished thinking is also put forward, namely,to a certain extent, the study of this paper covers up the locality of Chengdu literature, then what is the locality of Chengdu literature? What is the influence of the local Chengdu literature on the national literature ecology? From the previous four chapters,it is not hard to see that Chengdu literature in the early years of the Republic of China has obvious evolution.Whether it is the formation of the public sphere or the construction of a modern nation-state,whether it is the modern perception of daily life or the changes of the style, all of which is completely different from the classical Chengdu.Based on<Sichuan Gazette · Entertainment >,the purpose of this paper is to reveal the track of Chengdu literature evolution in the early period of Republic of China.
