The Great Game is the work of Peter Hopkirk who is a famous British writer and reporter. The book mainly tells that during the nineteenth century,Britain and Russia have a continuous fighting in Central Asia which lasted for about a hundred years. There are some vast deserts and huge mountains lying between British India and Tsarist Russia. These areas are unknown and unmapped. With Russian southern expansion into the heartland of Central Asia and British India’s continuous northern expansion into Kashmir, the two empires gradually show the trend of rivalry. So,the two empires launch a very magnificent but careful game in topography exploration, military spying and geopolitics and so on.People later called the game The Great Game. The Great Game is in the form of political comment. The book has many political and military terms and a large amount of new names of people and places. The book shows readers a series of vivid stories in a narrative way.The language in political text must be measured, solemn and rigorous. It must be normal and usually does not use slang. So the writer has to pay special attention to the language’s intrinsic logical, and try to avoid using expressions that do not conform to the rules of grammar. The writer first gave a brief introduction of the reason of the translation, translation task and process, and then mainly summarized the Skopos Theory.Next, under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the writer, based on the vocabulary and syntax, applied some translation methods and techniques to the original language and the translation such as literal translation and free translation, conversion, amplification and omission, splitting and combined translation, order and voice changed methods and so on.At the discourse level, the writer mainly used the grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion to analyse the typical cases in the discourse. Finally the writer gave a summary about the practice and found out the shortcomings and the harvest of this practice.
