This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Chapter One and Chapter Two of Social Media Marketing in Tourism and Hospitality written by Professor Roberta Minazzi of University of Insubria.Social media is a new field of tourism research. It challenges the comprehensive marketing ability of tourism enterprises to attract tourism consumers through social media. The excerpted source text explains the development of social media in tourism, proposes a classification of social media, and summarizes the main dimensions for an analysis of the digitization of word-of-mouth(WOM).Being an academic work, the source text can be categorized as informative text according to Reiss’ s text-typology theory.Taking the pattern of “translating according to sense and meaning” as the guiding principle, the translator adopts different menthods to make translation conform as much as possible to target reader’s habitual way of expression, and thus presenting a more comprehensive, objective and accurate concept of social media in tourism.Based on this translation practicefrom lexical, sentential and textual levelswith the guidance of the principle of “translating according to sense and meaning”,the author proposes the following three principles in translating academic discourse.First, the translation of academic vocabulary should be as correct and faithful as possible, with explanation added when necessary.Secondly, the translation of long and difficult sentences should be subject to the logic of the source language.Thirdly, the cohesive devices should be focused on when translating the discourse. The translation report consists of 5 chapters.Chapter One is a description of the translation project, introducing the source text, the significance of the project, and the structure of the report.Chapter Two is an introduction to the process of the translation project, including the preparation work for the translation, the process of translation, and proofreading.Chapter Three is an analysis of the type and feature of the source text.Chapter Four describes the concrete translation skills and methods the author used in the translation project, illustrated with typical cases. It also demonstrates how to solve possible translation problems at lexical, sentential and textual levels by adopting different translation techniques with the guidance of the principle of “translating according to sense and meaning”.Chapter Five summarizes the translator’s experience obtaining in the translation project and the room to be improved.
