Pragmatic equivalence is a combination of pragmatics and equivalence theory, and it emphasizes the context and the communicative functions of translation.Although most of researches now focus on dialogues, public signs and advertising languages, pragmatic equivalence can also play an indispensable role in fiction translation. On this note, this paper plans to do some relative studies.Based on the first chapter of A Spool of Blue Thread(about 12,261words)by American female novelist Anne Tyler, this translation report will discuss the achievement of the five layers of pragmatic equivalence(illocutionary equivalence,implicature-oriented equivalence,politeness-oriented equivalence,poetic-effectsoriented equivalence and meaning-networks-oriented equivalence)and translation strategies on the English novel translation. The findings concluded from the translation practice are as follows.Based on the English-Chinese translation practice and cases study,it is found that pragmatic equivalence can make a contribution to fiction translation, which could express the acting behind saying and pragmatic meanings as well as achieve the equivalence of politeness,poetic-effects and meaning-networks between English and Chinese. The translator needs to understand the main characters in the novels with contextual information and refer to the most equal pragmatic meaning with the assistance of translation tools and translation strategies.
