The documentary is gradually fading out of the public vision in market economy era. However,a documentary called “a Bite of China”,which came out in 2012,had undoubtedly broken that situation, and lead a tide of documentaries. What we know from the fever for “a Bite of China” is that a successful documentary needs not only appealing subjects, beautiful scene and exquisite editing, but also good narration.Narration works more than just stating, explaining and pushing the story,it can conduct the emotion of the film right into the hearts of the audiences, and sink their heart into the film.Nowadays, this type of narration has been accepted by more and more producers and audiences. It means that the concept of narration is going through a turning point.A good narration is vital to the whole film, since it is a perfect art form which combines the language of both scene and verbal. In a film, the narration mainly takes effect through hearing. But it's the words which determines its quality. Therefore,we must emphasize on the narration in the making of a new era documentary since it's critical to whether the film can meet the need of the audiences of the new era.I explained the concept, characteristic and functions of narrations in the first part of the article. Then I explored the storytelling method and the people oriented concept through analyzing the narrations in “a Bite of China” and “the Civil and Martial History of Nangong”.Finally I reached the conclusion that the narration is going to convey more humanistic care and social responsibilities other than merely has its basic functions.
