English Translation Of The Words With Chinese Characteristics In Xi Jinping: The Governance Of China From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

As the biggest developing country in the modern world,China not only enjoys the right of speech in developing countries,but also has significant and worldwide influence in the course of its development.On the political stage,China enjoys more and more widespread concern from other countries in the world.In the process of China’s advancement towards the world,political publicity materials,as important media,play vital roles in showing Chinese national image,spreading the governing ideas of the party and state leaders.However,due to differences in language and culture,people in international community,unfamiliar with history,national conditions,etc.of China,are easy to misunderstand Chinese politics,especially those in western countries.They tend to fall into the circumstances of one-sided interpretation of China’s political phenomena and distortion of China’s political intentions.Therefore,translation of political publicity materials is especially important.Xi Jinping: the Governance of China embodies a series of important discussions of Xi Jinping ever since he assumed the office of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and collected many new thoughts,ideas and judgments of the central collective leadership with President Xi Jinping as the core.It fully illustrates the governing ideas and principles of our country,which has important significance for the international community to comprehensively and objectively understand China’s development and its internal and external political policies.Language is an important carrier of culture.The words with Chinese characteristics in political publicity materials,as specific forms of expression in Chinese language,are not only unique in form,but also rich in culture and content and with political colors.The success of the translation of the words with Chinese characteristics in political publicity materials is directly related with the level of China’s foreign exchange and influences China’s foreign exchange and dissemination and,in turn,affects the international status and national image of China.As a result,the research on the translation of the words with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping: the Governance of China has realistic significance and innovation value.This thesis,based on Adaptation Theory and starting from the perspective of pragmatic translation,focuses on the translation of the words with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping: the Governance of China and discusses them from the four aspects: the contextual adaptation,structural adaptation,dynamic adaptation and salience adaptation,revealing that Adaptation Theory has an explanatory power for the translation of the words with Chinese characteristics,and has a guiding significance in translation activities.This thesis consists of the following five parts.The first chapter mainly discusses research background,research significance,research methodology,thesis structure and the innovation of this research.The second chapter mainly reviews the relevant literature of this research,including previous studies on the English translation of political texts and previous studies on the English translation of the words with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping: the Governance of China and the research gaps.The third chapter mainly introduces the origin and development of Adaptation Theory,from three language properties of variability,negotiability and adaptability,illustrates the four angles of pragmatic study,namely the contextual adaptation,structural adaptation,dynamic adaptation and salience in the process of dynamic adaptation.The fourth chapter is the core part of this research.This chapter firstly illustrates the feasibility of application of Adaptation Theory into English translation of the words with Chinese characteristics.Then,with the political publicity materials Xi Jinping: the Governance of China as the research subjects,focuses on the analysis of the specific examples of the words with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping: the Governance of China from the four aspects of the contextual adaptation,structural adaptation,dynamic adaptation and salience adaptation.The fifth chapter summarizes the main contents and views of this research,and reveals the limitations of this study and brings forth some feasible suggestions for further studies.
