Based on a case study of a dozen of translation projects the author participated in during her internship at the Chinese Translation Service in the United Nations Headquarters in New York between July and September in 2017,this thesis deals with the translation of United Nations documents from English into Chinese through a discussion of basic characteristics of such texts the author has summarized from her practical experience.English United Nations documents tend to be written with relatively fixed sentence patterns featuring a frequent use of nouns or noun structures, and a high-frequency vocabulary.Chapter One introduces the basic categories of the United Nations documents and the workflow of the Chinese Translation Service, followed by an analysis in Chapter Two of the characteristics of English United Nations documents and how these characteristics may affect the translation operation and make the translator's work more difficult. In Chapter Three, the author proposes tentative strategies for translating United Nations documents into Chinese properly and effectively.
