Report On C-E Translation Of Academic Paper:Explicitation Of Chinese Implicit Logic In Academic Text

The report draws on the C-E translation of an academic paper.The original material is On Designing and Application of Key Technology in Passive Building Energy Efficiency in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Area in China-Taking Zhejiang Province as an Example,a doctoral paper on architecture,which is of an academic writing style employed for theoretical analysis and summary of creative research results featuring long and complicated sentences as well as hidden logic.The tasks of the translation are to represent the style,content and language of the original text.This report is concerned chiefly with the difficulties of making hidden logic explicit,including(1)difficulties in making the hidden elaboration relation explicit;(2)difficulties in making the hidden extension relation explicit;(3)difficulties in making the enhancement elaboration relation explicit.Within the framework of Halliday’s theory of Cohesion and Coherence,solutions to the above difficulties are put forward as follows:(1)adding linking words and pronouns to make the hidden elaboration relation explicit;(2)adding attributive clause and adjust sentence pattern to make the hidden extension relation explicit;(3)adding conjunctions and functional words to make the enhancement relation explicit.It is shown that the above methods can effectively solve the translation problems in the project,which will hopefully provide useful guidance and reference for the author and other translators to finish the C-E translation of academic texts.
