| This thesis is a case study on the Chinese subtitling of the English financial vocabulary used in the American series Billions from the perspective of Nida's functional equivalence theory so as to investigate the corresponding specific translation strategies and their effects on the audience.American TV series have been more and more popular in China.The subtitling is quite helpful for the Chinese audience to understand the TV dramas and appreciate the American culture.Currently the dramas which have been introduced into China are mainly of action,science fiction,comedy,horror,law,medical and so on.However,finance is a theme which not so common compared with the above.Billions began its release on Jan 17,2016.It depicts the haggle for wealth in the political and economic fields in New York with abundant amounts of financial descriptions.It involves transactions in money market,capital market,fraud trading and economic dispute,etc.so that there are many financial vocabularies are used in it.This thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter introduces the financial vocabularies in the drama Billions concerning with their classification,features and functions.The second chapter focuses on the specific subtitling strategies analyzed in accordance with Nida's functional equivalence theory.The third chapter investigates the target audience's responses to evaluate the positive effects and the barriers of the translation.The thesis tries to investigate the specific subtitling strategies of the financial vocabularies to see how they are used and whether they are effective or not in satisfying the target audiences concerning with their responses to the drama.Basically,the three subtitling strategies used in the drama subtitling--literal translation,free translation and explanatory note are effective in the financial vocabularies subtitling.Hopefully,this thesis may be helpful for the research of the TV dram subtitling and the subtitling practice. |
