A Study On The Slave Families In The Plantation Before The America Civil War | | Posted on:2019-03-13 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:L P Xu | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2335330542491708 | Subject:World History | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | The issue of Afro-American has always been the concern of historians both at home and abroad.The black slaves had long been oppressed and discriminated against,and the Southern plantation slaves were a special group before the civil war.Although black slaves were forced to live in a abominable environment,they had successfully established a stable slave community through a variety of ways.Either as a person or as part of a primitive culture,they rely on a culture to carry out their own integrity.The family is the adhesive of the plantation community as well as the most important living organization of the plantation slaves.The plantation slave families were established and developed in the special background of slavery.The development of the slave family was not only disturbed by the slave owners,but the plantation community had a great influence on the formation and development of the black slave families.The black slave families in the plantation before the civil war were always interfered by slave owners under the slavery system,which penetrated every aspect of black family life and even decided the combination and separation of families.On the other hand,as a separate organization in the plantation community,the black slave family,though maintaining its own relativity,can not escape from the bondage of the slave community.This paper tries to analyze the black slave family in the background of the slave owners’ power and the slave community.The main body of this paper is divided into four parts.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly summarizes the research status of black and slave families at home and abroad.Because of the extraordinary circumstances of slavery,the black families of the plantation were different from the ordinary white families,and the establishment and development of the slave families had their own characteristics.The second chapter mainly introduces the life of the black slaves in the plantation before the establishment of the family,mainly including childhood and youth.Because of the attitude of the master and the different situation of the various plantation communities,the childhood life of the children of the plantation is also different.Some black children are accompanied by white children since they were young,so their childhood was relatively happy.But when they grew up,they found that the reality of the slave system was cruel.By the time of youth,the slaves began to set up their own families.Because of the influence of traditional African culture,the way of black slaves’ courtship combined the two cultural elements of the United States and Africa.The third chapter mainly introduces the family of black slaves,including the wedding of black slaves,childbirth and the nomenclature of the children.Then the marriage of the black slaves of the plantation was not recognized and protected by the law under slavery.But in order to maintain the stability of the plantation community and the interests of the plantation,most of the slave masters were allowing black slaves to form their own families.The black slave family was special because of the specific background at that time.Black slaves’ weddings,births,and children’s names were all interfered with by their owners.So the relationship between the plantation black slave family and the plantation community and the owner of the plantation was delicate and complex.The fourth chapter mainly introduces the stability and instability of the black slave family in the plantation.Since most of the plantation black slaves had their own special residence,some owners were far away from their homes.So some black slave families were relatively independent,and they could have their own family life.But because of the change of plantation slave community and the attitude of plantation owners,the black slave families are also very vulnerable,and are always faced with the threat of being dispersed.In general,the black slave family of the plantation was established and developed in a special environment.The development of the black slave family not only inherited the traditional culture of African ancestors,but also combined the native American elements.Under the influence of the slave owners’ power and the community,the black slave family became the most transmissibility of the black culture.At the same time,through the formation and development of the black slave family,we are also more aware of the evil of slave system. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Black family, Slave owner, Plantation community, Family life | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
