Angela Carter is a very famous contemporary English woman writer.She is believed as the writer of female politics.She published nine long novels and several short stories,dramas,translations and commentaries.Her famous collection of short stories is The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories which contains ten short stories.Angela Carter uses her powerful imagination to create a strange and gorgeous art world,at the same time expresses her profound feminist thought.In this collection,Carter uses her unique female view to reshape the female images in traditional fairy tales.The foreign scholars’ research on The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories mostly involved pornographic descriptions,narrative skills,intertexuality,carnivorousness and so on.The domestic scholars’ research on it mostly involved postmodernism,Gothic style,magic realism,comparative study and so on.However,it is a new attempt to study The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories from the angle of the Gothic feminism.This thesis aims to bring a new point on the understanding of this workfrom the perspective of the Gothic feminism.This thesis is divided into three chapters besides introduction and conclusion.In the introduction part,the author introduces Angela Carter’s life and works briefly.It also introduces the domestic and foreign scholars’ research status of Angela Carter’s works.Explains the innovative academic value of this thesis.The first chapter is the theoretic basis of the interpretation.There are three aspects includes the development of the Gothic novel and the female Gothic novel,the differences between the female Gothic novels and the Gothic novels,the female Gothic theory in literary criticism.The second chapter is a detailed analysis of the female Gothic elements and characteristics in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.It includes environmental elements,role elements and images elements.In environmental elements,through describe desolate scenery and horrible cultural environment to foil female hopelessness.In role elements,through enumerate cold-blooded fathers and paternal figures,violent husbands and lovers to express the patriarchal oppression on women.In images elements,through important images to express female were constrained and hint their tragic fate.The third chapter is the awakening of female consciousness and their resistance to patriarchy combining with the text of The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.The heroines in the novel bear the oppression from the patriarchal society,they choose to resist at last.Including the women rebellion against oppressions from the cold-blooded fathers and paternal figures;Women rebellion against oppressions from the violent husbands and lovers.The conclusion part is a summary overview of the whole thesis.Angela Cater gives new value and new theme to the traditional fairy tales,endows them new meanings and new life.Make the fairy tales become a new platform for the publicity of her feminism,make the readers criticize patriarchal,boost the morale of feminism.Make the simple fairy tales have new expressions and artistic conception,develop the feminism in the works most incisively.Express Carter’s good wishes to build harmonious sexual relations.
