Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China,Lao She created a large number of well-known literatures from the perspective of cultural enlightenment. However, after came back from the United States,Lao She was regarded as an intellectual who was required to learn from the public rather than an enlightenment pioneer. In this condition, terrified of the reality,Lao She had to make self-criticism frequently, delete and modify his novels, and cease the publication of those inopportune works. What’s more,he was desperate to create works,so he put various political movements on the stage. In the initial period of turning home,Lao She desired to express his delight through his works, but he gradually realized that such creation ran counter to his original artistic ideas. Therefore, depressed Lao She tried to return to his literary self, but this wish could not be achieved. In the end,Lao She could not bear the imbalance between the reality and his literary ideals and committed suicide by drowning himself in Beijing’s Taiping Lake.Analyzing the origin and the evolving of Lao She’s literature, this paper reveals Lao She’s identity crisis,so as to find the factors on literary identity that caused the decline of literature quality in his old age and his individual tragedy.Firstly, the author explored the stylistic turn of Lao She’s works before and after the year 1949.Before the year of 1949,Lao She,who attempted to save China by culture, was good at criticizing the chronic illness on the culture from the perspective of enlightenment.Nevertheless, such producing was stopped after 1949.Taking a humble attitude,Lao She began to celebrate the new era with a humble attitude and suffered the trauma that was caused by the sense of inferiority and self-denial.Secondly,the author enquired the evolvement of Lao She’s mentality.Since 1949,Lao She carefully revised his unacceptable works. But in the irresistible impulse of literary identity,he tried to create “The Teahouses” and“Beneath the Red Banner”.However, this impulse did not bring satisfactory results to Lao She: the former was criticized;the latter had to be terminated as the situation changed. In the special era,Lao She’s trauma can never recover. Finally,Lao She’s personal experience is the very epitome of the writers in that period.Although different writers made different choices, their results were consistent. As time went by,limited reflection was forgotten gradually, which also caused the trauma of indulgence.
