| The development of economy and technology greatly promotes the exchange of information and technology among different countries. In the process, individuals and companies are increasingly aware of the importance of submitting patent applications to protect their intellectual property rights. As China is getting increasingly innovation-oriented,there are more patent applications, and higher demands for translation of patent abstracts and patent specifications.Patent abstracts belong to technical texts featuring frequent use of terminologies and long sentences. These characteristics pose great challenges to translators. The report is on C-E translation of patent abstracts. The author analyzes the characteristics of patent abstracts, and explores how to improve C-E translation quality of patent abstracts under he guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One serves as an introduction of background information, requirements and significance of the translation task;Chapter Two analyzes text features from lexical, syntactical and textual levels;Chapter Three discusses the significance of Functional Equivalence Theory to C-E translation of patent abstracts;Chapter Four explores C-E translation of patent abstracts from levels of lexical, syntactical, textual and stylistic equivalence under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory;and Chapter Five is conclusion. The report argues that when translating patent abstracts, translators should analyze text features, compare the differences between Chinese and English patents, and translate terminologies and long sentences according to their features. The guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory helps to render patent abstracts from Chinese to English in a better way. |
